Woolwich is the new Shoreditch, an edgy town on the lower side of the river Thames. It’s massively gathering pace especially since the old armouries (ammunition factories) were developed into commercial and residential units. It’s the buzz of the Southeast not far from central London and now with the Elizabeth Line it’s even closer.
What people don’t know is, a lot of interest was generated with 'StreetFest' some years ago, and it’s now the gateway to some of East London’s greatest gastronomy. The mix of Nepalese, Cajun, Afro Caribbean, Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisines where these recipes characteristically consist of vegetable and often very spicy meat dishes. "Healthy Stuff"
As some people may not be aware also, Woolwich Arsenal is actually the original home ground of the famous world renowned Arsenal Football Club. Most recently the area has established a presence for the non contact sport of Tag Rugby, where the Royal Arsenal Tag Rugby Club was founded and the only club of it's kind affiliated with the Rugby Football Union. Since the redevelopment of the grade listed buildings and warehouses it has reignited a lot of activities and created some great energy.
Another aspect which is going to landmark Woolwich is night-time entertainment. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, recently (November 17th, 2022) announced that Woolwich is set to become one of the capital’s new Night-time Enterprise Zones.
Woolwich will be delivering a year-round mix of events, encouraging locals and those in other boroughs to think of them as a ‘lates’ destination.
They will also be creating a low level sustainable lighting scheme connecting the town centre and the Royal Arsenal, improving safety and create a more welcoming destination for all.
The Mayor is committed to creating a fairer, more equal, integrated city where all people feel welcome and able to fulfil their potential. He understands that high streets like Woolwich are the lifeblood of South East London’s diverse communities and their role at night will be crucial to Woolwich's economic and social recovery.
Night Time Enterprise Zones focus on high streets and town centres after 6pm, supporting boroughs and businesses to experiment with new ways of diversifying their local night time offer, expand opening hours and increase participation and animation of high streets at night. They also highlight the important role night time workers and businesses can play in local economies.
Local people, including workers and business owners, are at the heart of the creation and delivery of Night Time Enterprise Zones, setting out ways to make the high street a place that serves the needs of a diverse range of people and helping to reduce inequalities.
A successful Zone can provide a template for high streets and town centres across London, allowing them to be part of the capital’s wider economic recovery from the pandemic.
